7 Things to Avoid Doing at a Job Interview

Finding a job can be tough. You want to do everything you can to land your dream job. You also want to do everything you can to avoid making mistakes during the job interview. Here are some things you’re better off not doing if you want to get the job you know is the perfect fit.

Show Up Late

Above all, you should be at the interview on time. Honor the interviewer’s decision to give them your time. If possible, be a few minutes early. This allows you to freshen up, calm down (jitters happen to the best of us!) and review what you plan to say.

Be Negative

Employers don’t want people who are unhappy. They want people who always look on the bright side of things. Do not say anything negative during the interview. If asked why you left a previous employer, smile and say it was not the right job at the right time. Then make it clear this job is exactly that.

Fail to Bring a Resume Copy

In these days of online records, it may be tempting to assume the employer can just glance at your resume online. Don’t assume this. Bring several paper copies with you to interview and be prepared to hand them one the as soon as you’re asked for it.

Talk About Your Personal Problems

The employer doesn’t care about any issues you might have. You don’t need to bring up your existing health problems or any childcare issues. Instead, be as vague as possible about your personal life. Make polite chitchat but nothing more. Don’t ask the interviewer any questions about their personal lives either, unless it’s pertinent such as the fact that you both went to the same school.

Lack Confidence

Employers aren’t looking for timid people. They want people who are confident and happy to speak out. Be polite but be firm. Come to the interview remembering that you are the right fit for the job. Approach it knowing that you have something to offer the company that they need. Self-confidence is one of the best tools in your box, so be sure to use it.

Fail to do Your Homework

The company knows about you. You need to show you know about them. In these days of easy information access, it’s easier than ever to know a great deal about any company. Spend some time looking up all aspects of the company before you arrive. You should know specifics such as the company’s industry, their overall market share and even their plans for expansion. You should be prepared to ask them questions the second you begin the interview. Company officials like people who present them with information rather than waiting for it from others.

Dress Inappropriately

Your clothing is what your employer sees the second you step through the door, and the right clothing can make or break your first impression. Women should typically avoid high heels and revealing necklines. Men should look for a suit that is well cut and fits them perfectly. Both sexes should avoid the use of excess makeup or any kind of cologne or perfume.
